Athletic Bilbao have sacked coach Gaizka Garitano despite the Basque side's 1-0 win over Elche in La Liga.

Bilbao, who had enjoyed only one win in their previous seven games and are provisionally ninth in the table, announced the end of Garitano's two-year spell at the club in a statement.

"Athletic Bilbao have decided to relieve Gaizka Garitano and his team of their position in charge, which he took on Dec 5, 2018 (as a promotion) from the B team," the statement said.

"Athletic Bilbao would like to thank him for his dedication, effort and delivery since he took the first-team reins."

Garitano took Athletic to last season's Spanish Cup final, which is still to be contested against rivals Real Sociedad after it was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Athletic finished 11th last season and the team has struggled to find consistency in this campaign.

"We know that we represent our people, that we are playing for something more than football," said Garitano after the game, before the announcement of his sacking.

"Whether I'm here or not, I want (Athletic to win)."
