An Arsenal team featuring Matildas Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord were held to a 2-2 draw by Ajax of Amsterdam in the first leg of their UEFA Women's Champions League qualifier.
The Gunners came from behind in their qualifying second round tie at Borehamwood on Tuesday, but conceded a late equaliser just as it seemed they would take a slender advantage to the Netherlands next week.
Instead they still have plenty to do to join Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter in the competition's group stages.
Catley started while Foord joined the action from the bench on the hour-mark.
Arsenal conceded after 17 minutes to Romee Leuchter but got on level terms six minutes later when Swedish forward Stina Blackstenius pounced when Rafaelle Souza's header came back off the crossbar from a corner.
Ajax could have regained the lead, but wasted several chances and paid when Scotland's Kim Little converted a penalty after England's Beth Mead was fouled.
Catley went close from a free-kick awarded after Foord was fouled as Arsenal dominated the second period.
But Ajax broke and Leuchter scored an 82nd-minute equaliser.
Elsewhere Bayern Munich won 1-0 at Real Sociedad, Juventus drew 1-1 at Danish club Koge and Rangers were beaten 3-2 at home by Benfica.
More Matildas could be in action in the competition on Wednesday. Paris St Germain (Lydia Williams) host Swedish club BK Hacken (Aivi Luik) while Rosengard (Teagan Micah) go to Brann (Tameka Yallop).
The second legs are next week with the aggregate winners joining defending champions Lyon (Carpenter), Chelsea (Kerr), Barcelona and Wolfsburg in the 16-team group stages.
