Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero has been ruled out of the coming World Cup in Russia with a knee injury.

The 31-year-old Manchester United stopper suffered the right knee injury training with the squad and will require an operation, the Argentine federation said late on Tuesday.

Romero played every game in qualifying for the World Cup but the number one spot is now to be decided between Wilfredo Caballero of Chelsea and Franco Armani of River Plate.

Coach Jorge Sampaoli has added Nahuel Guzman to the squad a Romero's replacement.

Argentina meet Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in Group D of the World Cup which begins on June 14.
