Unai Emery slumped back in his seat on the bench when Newcastle's third goal went in. Are his Villa players running out of steam?
They were second best to a Newcastle side who delivered a performance brimming with energy, enthusiasm and endeavour.
By contrast Villa were, well, flat.
Only when Ollie Watkins pulled one back did they briefly flicker into life to get the home fans on their feet.
It's taken 11 Premier League games but fortress Villa Park has now been breached and while this defeat does not end a title challenge which always seemed unlikely to go the distance, it is a major setback.
Emery said after the final whistle the club are close to wrapping up a deal for Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers.
A new signing to freshen things up might be just the tonic. There's still plenty to play for this season.
