Alexandrova advances in WTA's Petersburg

Ekaterina Alexandrova has led a Russian charge into the last eight at the St Petersburg Ladies Trophy with a straight sets win against Tereza Martincova.

Top seed Alexandrova despatched the Czech Republic's Martincova 6-3 6-4 while fellow Russians Svetlana Kuznetsova, Vera Zvonareva and Anastasia Gasanova also progressed.

Fourth seed Kuznetsova beat China's Xinyu Wang 6-1 7-5 and Zvonareva upset French third seed Fiona Ferro 6-7 (8-6) 7-5 7-6 (7-2) in a match which lasted three hours and 10 minutes.

Gasanova also came out on top in a three-hour contest, winning 6-2 6-7 (8-6) 7-5 against Ukraine's Katarina Zavatska.

Latvian sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko was knocked out after losing 6-3 7-6 (11-9) to Romania's Jaqueline Cristian.

At the Monterrey Open in Mexico, Britain's Harriet Dart was eliminated in the second round, 6-4 6-3, by Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova, who will play a quarter-final against Canada's Leylah Fernandez after her 6-1 6-4 win over another Slovakian in Kristina Kucova.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, also of Slovakia, beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini 2-6 6-2 6-2 and will play Spanish seventh seed Sara Sorribes Tormo, who progressed via walkover from her scheduled second round match against Slovenia's Kaja Juvan.
