Collingwood recruiting manager Derek Hine says Jordan Russell will provide the club with selection flexibility for the 2013 season.

Russell finished in the top six in Carlton's best-and-fairest twice including being runner-up to Chris Judd in 2010 and joins Clinton Young and Quinten Lynch in being recruited to the Magpies over the trade and free agency periods.

Collingwood gave up pick 71 for the defender, which they received for trading away Tom Young to the Western Bulldogs.

With the retirement of 268-gamer Chris Tarrant and Chris Dawes (Melbourne) and Sharrod Wellingham (West Coast) traded, Hine said Russell's addition gave the list more experience to cope with the rigours of the AFC.

"With the game the way it is, it's a brutal game so we just wanted to get a little bit more experience and body in there," Hine said.

"I think he's a 116-game player and Clinton Young coming in who's 116 as well actually and then obviously Quinten Lynch, so it sort of gives us a little bit more flexibility in terms of the maturity of the list.

"We had roughly about 500 games potentially going out with some retirements and so on."

Collingwood swapped picks 42 and 48 for North Melbourne's pick 39 in a late trade before the 2pm deadline.

Hine said Collingwood wanted to improve their position in the draft on November 22 with their trade with the Kangaroos.

"We just tried to get ourselves up the draft a little bit," Hine said.

"We weren't going to use the 48 so we pushed it forward and it just gets us inside the 40."

The Magpies received picks 18 and 21 for trading Wellingham and Dawes, with their pick at 19 giving them four selections in the top 40.

"I think with bringing the players in through free agency, it hasn't really hurt us in terms of our draft position and the boys that have gone out has allowed us to get up in the draft, which is something we haven't been for a long time," Hine said.
