Port Adelaide recruit Angus Monfries admitted he had many 'sleepless nights' when deciding his future, but a chat with new Power coach Ken Hinkley swayed his mind.

Monfries was offered a new contract at Essendon, but decided to accept a four-year deal at Alberton with the two clubs agreeing on a trade on Monday.

The 25-year-old, who played for Walkerville Junior Football Club in South Australia, said moving home to friends and family was a key factor in his decision but it was Hinkley who ultimately provided the final push.

"I spoke to Kenny on Friday last week and after chatting to him it made my decision a lot clearer," Monfries said.

"I wanted to be a part of the footy club.

"I had a lot of sleepless nights thinking about what I was going to do, but at the end of the day (I'm) going to have those friends that I've made at Essendon for life.

"But I think it was the best thing for me and my career to move to Port Adelaide."

The prospect of spending more time in the midfield also appealed to Monfries, who spent the majority of his 150 games at Essendon as a forward.

"To be able to have more opportunity to play up the ground in the midfield is something I've always wanted to do and I'm a player that wants to get the best out of myself and I think I can do that at Port Adelaide," he said.

"I've got a lot of work to do, I'm going to work really hard over the pre-season to get my body up to standard, to get my fitness levels to an elite level and I'll be putting every foot forward to try and make an impact in there next year."

What never achieved elite fitness levels at Essendon? I thought he had gone through the Weapons gruelling pre season of last year with the rest of the players? or maybe he loafed a little knowing he was going to Port next year?
