Greater Western Sydney have officially beaten Port Adelaide to the punch for the signature of Leon Cameron with the league's youngest club announcing they have snared the former Hawthorn assistant on a four-year deal on Thursday.

In what is one of the more significant signings in the Giants' short history, Cameron will assume the role as coach Kevin Sheedy's senior assistant next season and has been earmarked to take over the reins from the four-time premiership mentor in 2014 under a succession plan devised by the club.

Cameron said he was excited about the move north and can't wait to get started at the club.

"To work with one of the greats in Kevin Sheedy will be a perfect way to prepare for my senior coaching career and I'm now looking forward to pre-season training and getting the team ready for what will be a very exciting year ahead," he said.

Cameron replaces Mark Williams in the position after the former Port Adelaide coach left GWS early last month to join Richmond as a development coach.

It's believed Williams thought he would succeed Sheedy at the Giants as early as next year but left the club after the legendary former Essendon boss signed on for another season.

The recruitment of Cameron by GWS is a massive blow to Port Adelaide who were reported to have offered the former Bulldogs and Richmond star their senior coaching job which was made vacant after the sacking of Power favourite son Matthew Primus in August.

But Greater Western Sydney ended any chance of that happening as the opportunity of taking control of one of the league's most exciting young lists proved too good to pass up by Cameron.

Gold Coast assistant Ken Hinkley and former Sydney and Bulldogs mentor Rodney Eade are thought to be the frontrunners now to replace Primus as the Power's coaching wishlist continues to shrink.
