Brisbane Lions defender Joel Patfull has won the Merrett-Murray Medal as the club's best and fairest.

The hard-working defender polled 34 votes, narrowly edging out midfielder Daniel Rich by two with Irishman Pearce Hanley finishing third on 28.5.

The honour comes as a just reward for the 27-year-old, whose seven seasons in the AFL have come without much fanfare.

The award highlights Patfull's hard work over the season, evidenced by his club-high 153 one percenters, in a year which saw the Lions finish 13th on the ladder.

Exciting youngster Dayne Zorko took out the Rookie of the Year award with midfielder Jack Redden voted Player's Player of the Year.

In other news, veteran Amon Buchanan has announced his retirement, bringing to an end his 134-game career.
