Hawthorn midfielder Brad Sewell said his side are not daunted by the prospect of overcoming their Geelong hoodoo on Friday night.

The Hawks have not beaten the Cats since the 2008 grand final, enduring eight losses to Geelong since, including six by less than 10 points, in what has become one of the great modern rivalries.

But Alastair Clarkson's men are flying at the moment, having won eight straight matches by an average margin of just over 81 points, while the Cats have been somewhat patchy in their premiership defence, despite two solid victories over Essendon and Adelaide leading into the MCG blockbuster.

And Sewell said while the playing cohort would discuss their recent history of losing to the Cats, the rugged midfielder said plenty has changed since their last meeting with Chris Scott's side.

"Yeah they have (had our measure), whatever it is, we've been on the wrong side of the ledger at the end of the day for our last few matches," Sewell said.

"I'm sure it will be something that will be touched on during the course of the week, it'd be hard not to, and you guys (the media) keep adding fuel to the fire, and I'm sure you will throughout the rest of the week.

"We've been building over the last couple of months, and look, they're a different side to the last time we played each other, and we're a different side."

Sewell said it was not a necessity for the Hawks to overcome their bogey side on Friday night in order to succeed in September.

"Once you get to finals it's a different ball game regardless of who you're playing," he said.

"Past results in matches and games gone by mean nothing.

"That's the case for every game week on week regardless of what's happened in the past.

"Your actions will be judged in accordance to that night or that game."

8 wins to Geelong equals 32 points on the ladder whereas the solitary Hawthorn win equals a Flag. I know what I'd rather have.
