Collingwood midfielder Sharrod Wellingham is facing an extended stint on the sidelines with scans confirming Carlton's Kade Simpson suffered a broken jaw from their collision on Friday night.

Wellingham was placed on report after collecting Simpson in a solid bump that left the Blue concussed during the third quarter of Carlton's shock win.

Leading sports physician Dr Peter Larkins believes that scans revealed a crack in Simpson's jaw, although the extent of the damage is unclear at this stage.

That spells bad news for Wellingham, who is looking at least four weeks on the sidelines.

The incident could be assessed as reckless (two activation points), severe impact (four) and contact to the head (two).

That would be a total of eight activation points and a Level 5 offence, which draws 550 points and a five-match suspension. Although he could have that reduced to four weeks with an early guilty plea.

The Match Review Panel could take a harder stance and assess the incident as intentional, not reckless, which would be even worse for Wellingham.

should have got brownlow votes. we now have quite a collection from stan mangro flattening jezza, milburn knocking out silvagni and now simpson. looks like carlton players hit the deck faster than their supporters jump off the bandwagon

How could it not be intentional? he was never once looking at the ball or for the ball - shades of leigh matthews - neville bruns - outside the arena - he would have been charged with aggravated assault.... With intent to maim....if i had anything to do with it - 12 weeks minimum.... Letter of apolagy to his family - friends - club - team mates - opposing team - the broken jawed simpson - and kades family... And a fine of $10,000 - add dipierdomenico to the other two and you have a real trio of thugs

He will probably get off with a smack on the hand, because you know, he plays for the untouchable Collingwood.
