A FULL replay of a drawn grand final will remain a unique element of the competition with the AFL Commission deciding to stick with the existing rule on Monday.

The decision comes just over two months after the third grand final draw in VFL/AFL history forced a replay the following week.

Collingwood and St Kilda were locked on 68 points in the first decider in September this year when the final siren sounded.

The following week was dominated by debate over changing the rules to play extra time at the end of the game rather than a replay, with Collingwood captain Nick Maxwell arguing for change.

"The rule regarding replaying a grand final was discussed at the commission meeting," AFL media manager Patrick Keane told afl.com.au on Monday."

Good move, I believe.  It is unique for us to remain this way, most other sports do the extra time...

Totally agree Tiggs, it is too easy these days to ignore tradition. Next thing, Missionary Position will be Old Hat and no longer used! Not that it likely is by the more enlightened.
The stab pass, Drop Kick still have their place in Football as well. The stab pass is a luxury if practiced & performed well, almost uninterceptable. The Drop Kick! Well, if he goes, who the F..k are you going to laugh at next time you go out, Life's too serious already!

This has been a formula of which I have witnessed on only two occassions, and, each time, the better "Team" won the replay. I can understand that it is hard for the St's supporters, but they really should be accustomed to that by now! Look what it did to Molly's Hairdo!

CA says no Warnie comeback, maybe the Saints need to ring Carl Dietrich, at least he didn't cry and actually hit someone sometimes! West Coast could use a bit if mongrel occassionally. Hunger is what it takes. Collingwood were the best, and, hungriest all year, I really hope they go B2B!

The people that run the AFL, are continually telling old fogies like me to get with the times !!

Dare I say, THEY SHOULD DO THE SAME !!

As much as I don't like change and like to keep tradition, like the antiquated loss of score for having more than 18 men on the feild, this rule has had it's day.
And in the words of that @%&# gretel killeen " Replaying a GF IS TIME TO GO!! "

    Ms Tiger
I have to agree with you we should stick with the full replay,I would hate for anybody to lose the biggest match of the year for the sake of an extra 10 mins or the 1st score you should not
train bloody hard all year for it to come down to 10 mins added
    time.

That said I must say that I do think the saints would have won in
extra time you only had to look at the pies faces to know they
were done, getting back to the replay issue you can not decide on the day there will be extra time  to decide the winner.

In the replay I think the pies showed they were superior and 8
goals was a fair margin  between the 2 teams, the pies have been
in drawn gf,s and lost the replay and the same could have happened again but I still think both teams deserve the right to a
    replay.

                           Go the pies

well I saw malthouse tearing up towards the end of the draw-for his sake I,m glad they had a replay-in the end the best side won-which probably wouldn,t have  happened if they played extra time.draws in the finals have given pies their last two flags-funny that!

    Yes Ms Tiger
You are correct the best team won on both occasion,s by more
than 50 pts both times ,also in 1990  beat the bombers twice by
10 goals and then 8 goals in gf after the bombers finished top at
the end of h&a season after beating pies all season.

                               go the pies

ps Mr Ferret the pies have not been too successful in gf,s only
15 wins from 43 tries so I do remember their successes very
    well.

Hey Tezza, I think U misread Ratuss's post, he said two, as in 2, not too many mate. You will find he is the fairest of posters usually without a nasty bone in his body!
I gather then that thus far, the concensus is...
Tradition has a good sound basis, not about the money!
    and
Despite Brendan Goddards almost Carl Dietrich heroics, the better side won!
I wonder if Goddards performance will mirror Carl's.

Lose the Flag one year, rubbed out the next when they won...but I think he played!! Not sure, met with the surgeons as well when they weren't so flash with the blades, tissue and sutures!
    Best do some research!

My bad Carl's surname was Ditterich, he did however miss the '66 GF after the Saints were rolled by the 4th placed Bombers.
Baldock, Stewart and Kennedy had a big hand in the '66 Granny. Big Carl was suspended. ( a frequent visitor to the tribunal!)
Baldock was under an injury cloud but, still played the game out and kicked the opening goal.
I gave Carl cheek over the fence at Bonegilla, was a Geelong Fan back then when he did his Natios up there! He was a good guy and had a few kicks with us little @%&# boys.

I can live with keeping the replay - how many other sports do you get to have your biggest day twice to be sure the best team wins?

    Mr Ferret & Mr Killa
I apologise if you think I was being a bit precious about the pies
I do remember their success well but I also remember their
failures as well and I try to be a fair and just poster.

I will take this opportunity to wish you both and everybody else
on these  boards a safe and happy christmas and a very good new year all the best.

go the pies ( terry) thanks

should there  be consistancy through the finals??

if the prelim is a draw isn't it currently set that they go to extra time?

if the gf is going to be a replay then the rest should be!

not like it will happen all the time though

thank god the eagles and swans were able to outbore each other otherwise would of had another game!
