Dusty's incredible gesture for young fan

Winning the Norm Smith Medal is one of the highest honours an AFL player can receive. Dustin Martin has given his to a young fan going through some tough times.

According to the Herald Sun, Martin has parted ways with the medal he received for being best on ground in the AFL Grand Final, gifting it to 15-year-old Will Murray.

Will was left a quadriplegic in a tragic accident after he jumped off a pier at Half Moon Bay in Victoria in 2016.

Richmond Football Club heard of Will's plight and offered a wide range of support through fundraising efforts, as well as a number of players getting in touch with the youngster.

One of those players was Martin, who regularly visits Will at his home to play PlayStation and meditate.

“They have a fierce rivalry on FIFA then head off to Will’s room and do a bit of mediation,” Will's mother Emma told the Herald Sun.

When Dusty got back to the Richmond change rooms after their drought-breaking premiership victory, he immediately embraced Will and draped his Norm Smith Medal around his neck.

According to Will, the medal is safely tucked away in his bedroom.

“No one will be able to come and snatch it off me,” Will said. “But I’m not going to keep it, it’s his, he should celebrate it.”

News of Dusty's brilliant gesture comes during a week of turmoil for the Tigers, with police investigating a player over the distribution of an image of a topless woman wearing a 2017 premiership medal.

If charged and found guilty, the player could face up to two years behind bars under Victorian cyber-bullying laws.

The club says it is disappointed with the situation and is fully co-operating with the police investigation.
