Jackson Trengove opens up on contract situation

Port Adelaide utility Jackson Trengove has opened up on his contract situation, just hours before going in for his exit interview.

The 26-year-old is a free agent for the first time after 153 games in eight seasons, including 19 this year.

Linked to the Western Bulldogs throughout the year, Trengove was dropped by coach Ken Hinkley after a loss to Adelaide in round 20.

He did not return to the side as the Power headed into the finals and lost to West Coast in an extra-time heartbreaker.

"After that game (in round 20), I had every intention to still be at our footy club," he said on Triple M radio on Wednesday morning.

"But probably over the last four weeks I've had to reassess where I'm at our football club, whether I'm in the picture of playing footy.

"Obviously I still think I've got a lot of AFL footy left in me."

Trengove was due to meet with Port Adelaide at 10am.

While the club may well indicate an offer is forthcoming, the Victorian is seeking a defined role.

He has been used as a defender, ruckman and forward -- sometimes in the same game -- in the last few seasons.

"I've got to have that honest conversation with the football club of where they actually see me, if I fit in their picture," he said.

"And if I don't, then I've definitely going to have to look elsewhere."

Should Trengove move to the Bulldogs he would be a strong chance to nail down a spot in the forward line, given the 2016 premiers' struggles in front of goal and the possibility of Jake Stringer leaving the club.

He also appears prepared for the pressures of moving to a new club, having noticed his own attitude change since being dropped by Port Adelaide.

"I've really learned a lot about myself and how to handle yourself in situations that aren't going as you would (hope)," he said.
