Toby Greene in hot water for brutal punch to opponent's face

GWS star Toby Greene looks set for a stint on the sidelines after blatantly clocking Caleb Daniel in the face during the Giants' win over the Bulldogs.

Late in the third quarter of the Friday night clash in Canberra, Greene came over the top late and high and clocked Daniel in the face after the Bulldogs player had taken a mark.

Greene may have been trying to dislodge the ball but collected his opponent straight in the face, leaving him on the ground and bloodied.

Greene was immediately reported for striking and hit with a 50m penalty before Channel 7 microphones caught an umpire telling him: "We've been telling you for a couple of weeks now that you're getting very close to the edge."

The half forward was reported for an alleged head butt on Sydney's Isaac Heeney last Saturday, but the match review panel deemed there was insufficient force to warrant a charge.

The incident occurred one round after he was fined $1,000 for striking Port Adelaide's Dan Houston.

During the week coach Leon Cameron said he loved the competitiveness of players like Greene, but they needed to make sure they kept their emotions in check.

"We've had a good chat with Toby over the last couple of weeks," Cameron said.

"He's got to make sure that in the moment he's got to be able to control that aggression.

"The one thing I will say is that I love the way he goes about it, he's such a competitor.

"But he does know that he's got to make sure that when that tipping point comes he's just got to be able to take a deep breath and move on to the next contest."

GWS went on to serve the Bulldogs some cold preliminary final revenge, writing the latest thrilling chapter of the two clubs' burgeoning AFL rivalry with a two-point win.

The Giants came from behind to win 11.9 (75) to 9.19 (73) in front of a crowd of 14,048 who were treated to another classic encounter.
