Phillips claims first AFL Players' women's MVP award

Adelaide premiership player Erin Phillips has been named the MVP of the first AFLW season by her colleagues.

Phillips, with 204 votes, won the award from Melbourne midfielder Karen Paxman (149 votes) and Carlton's Darcy Vescio (132 votes).

It is another piece of silverware for Phillips, who was named best on ground in Saturday's grand final win over Brisbane.

"I'm incredibly humbled to have won this award," Phillips said.

"To be recognised by your peers is something all athletes hold in high esteem and this is something I will hold very close to my heart for a long time.

"I'm so proud of what we, as AFLW players, have been able to achieve over the past eight weeks and look forward to what the future holds for all of us as players and aspiring female footballers right across Australia."

The two-time Olympian had 28 disposals and kicked two goals in the decider after an influential season in the middle for the Crows.

There might be more accolades to come, too, with Phillips firmly in the running for the top gong at Tuesday night's W Awards, the AFLW's Brownlow equivalent.

She is also likely to make the All Australian team, having been named in the 40-player squad last week.

Phillips took part in the AFL Women's competition between WNBA seasons and will soon return to the US to play for the Dallas Wings.

Adelaide co-captain Chelsea Randall won the AFL Players' Most Courageous award, while Melbourne skipper Daisy Pearce was named Best Captain.

Along with Phillips, Pearce is one of the favourites to take out the W tomorrow night.
