'Would you drive across the Nullarbor with him?'

Sam Mitchell and Brad Hill had everyone convinced they were driving across the Nullarbor together to link up with their new clubs in the West.

Turns out they travelled 20km from Waverley to Hawthorn.

After being traded to West Australian clubs, Hill and Mitchell posted a photo together in Mitchell's car captioned "cruising across the Nullarbor".

A number of media outlets picked it up and ran with it, labelling it the perfect way for two Hawthorn premiership stars to drive off into the sunset.

But Brownlow Medal winner Mitchell has lifted the lid on what they really got up to.

"We were cleaning out our lockers at Hawthorn and there were a few people there and we were saying goodbye to some of the staff and coaches and things like that," he said.

"Hilly didn't have a car so I gave him a lift home.

"He put it on, I don't really know the social media but he put it on Snapchat or in the story or something like that.

"We were on the Monash. We got from Waverley to Hawthorn and that was the extent of our drive."

That approximately 20 kilometres, slightly under the 3441 kilometres from Waverley to Perth.

"I did have a bit of a laugh," Mitchell said on SEN.

"As if I would do that. You've met Hilly. Would you drive across the Nullarbor with him?"

NOT MY BEST YEAR: Mitchell's massive Brownlow admission

"I will still be in Melbourne for a couple more days. (We are) living in a little shoebox apartment while our house is getting packed up.

"It is certainly an interesting experience moving our family across the country but it is something we are getting our teeth into."

The former teammates will square off against each other next year, with Hill joining Fremantle and Mitchell playing for West Coast.
