David Smorgon will stand down as Western Bulldogs president after 17 years in the role.

Smorgon was expected to end his tenure at the end of next season but is set to hand over the reins to the man he replaced ahead of the 1997 campaign, Peter Gordon.

Smorgon will officially step aside at the Bulldogs annual general meeting on December 20.

The 65-year-old, who oversaw eight finals series - including five preliminary finals, departs the club as the second-longest serving president in the AFL behind Sydney Swans chairman Richard Colless.
