Fremantle coach Ross Lyon has given a glowing endorsement of Brett Kirk after the former Swan agreed to join the Dockers as an assistant coach.

A 241-game player for Sydney, Kirk had a relationship with Lyon and Dockers' stoppages coach Mark Stone from when they were at the Swans.

Lyon said Kirk was the type of person the club hoped to attract.

"Clearly he's got great footy character, great personal character, and we're thrilled that he'll take up an appointment as an assistant coach and complement our midfield," he said.

"We have a really strong relationship and when he was finishing his football we had lots of conversations about opportunities for Brett.

"I think it's a great opportunity for Brett to come into a really strong organisation that's building and determined to be successful.

"He's been to places and experienced things that a lot of people at this club haven't."

Kirk was a key component in Sydney's 2005 premiership team when they defeated the West Coast Eagles by four points. He retired in 2010.

The 35-year-old has spent the past two years working as an International Ambassador in which he travelled the world with his family spreading the AFL's message.

Kirk has been a part of Seven's 2012 AFL coverage as a boundary rider.

With his own reputation defined by his fearless approach, Kirk will work with one of the AFL's developing midfield groups, including young-gun Nat Fyfe, David Mundy, Clancy Pearce, Michael Barlow and Tendai Mzungu.

Lyon said he could not remember how the formal discussions with Kirk began but insisted he would be an asset to the club.

"In conversations, he's really strong in his head something switched where he wants to coach," Lyon.

"I know he can really help us grow.

"He's been doing leadership with Blue Stone Edge, working at the Gold Coast, flying in."

Kirk had cited burnout as the need for his two-year hiatus from football but said he was now ready to make a return.
