Hectic AFL Trade Period closes with flurry of deals

Essendon and Sydney remain at loggerheads over Joe Daniher, but Bradley Hill's contentious switch from Fremantle to St Kilda has been finalised as the deadline of the AFL trade period looms.

After days of tense negotiations, the Saints sent Blake Acres, picks 10, 58 and future second and fourth-round picks to the Dockers for Hill and a future third-rounder.

Joe Daniher will stay at Essendon, with Sydney unable to prise him from the Bombers on the last day of the AFL trade period.

Former Essendon captain Tim Watson said on Channel Seven news that there would be no deal.

The All-Australian key forward, who has only played 11 games over the last two seasons because of groin injuries, had requested a trade to the Swans.

In further trade paperwork lodged after the 3pm AEDT start of the final day of trade period, St Kilda's Jack Steven joined Geelong for pick 58, Brisbane's Lewis Taylor joined the Swans for pick 48 and Zac Smith returned to Gold Coast.

Alex Keath's move to the Western Bulldogs and finding a home for Josh Jenkins remain on Adelaide's agenda after they shipped Hugh Greenwood to Gold Coast and Sam Jacobs to GWS on Tuesday.

Sydney forward Tom Papley's move to Carlton and Gold Coast forward Jack Martin's move to the Blues were other key trades that didn't get over the line.

Deals that were finalised on the last day of the trade window included St Kilda sending Jack Steven and Josh Bruce to Geelong and the Western Bulldogs respectively and Bradley Hill moving from Fremantle to the Saints.

Adelaide shipped Alex Keath to the Bulldogs and Josh Jenkins to Geelong in deals done in the last hour of trading.

After days of relative inaction, 29 trades were completed on deadline day with paperwork for a total of 46 deals lodged with the AFL over the 10-day trade period.
