The Islanders are close to a deal with Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment to split their home games between Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum in the seasons before their new arena at Belmont Park opens, Newsday reports. The new arena is not expected to be ready until the 2021-22 season.
How the Islanders’ games will be scheduled between the two arenas is not yet known.
Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment operates both Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Nassau Coliseum on Long Island.
The temporary and part-time move back to the Coliseum marks a return to the Isles’ roots – they called the arena home from the franchise’s inception in 1972 through 2015, when they moved to Barclays Center.
The Long Island facility has recently been renovated, and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, who toured the building on Jan. 9, has had a change of heart about its viability as short-term home for the Isles.
