The 120th edition of the Austral Wheel Race has been marred after a number of cyclists were injured in a horror crash.

The annual event is the oldest track bicycle race in the world, dating back to 1887.

Dubbed Australia's greatest track cycling event, riders are assigned handicaps according to ability, with the final run over 2000m.

Past competitors include distinguished cyclists Gordon Johnson, Steele Bishop, Sid Patterson, Russell Mockridge, Danny Clarke, Brett Aitken, Gary Neiwand and Shane Kelly.
