Kriechmayr claims maiden win, downhill glory for Huetter as Vonn crashes

Vincent Kriechmayr claimed his maiden World Cup victory in the super-G at Beaver Creek and Cornelia Huetter won the downhill at Lake Louise as Lindsey Vonn crashed out on Friday.

Kriechmayr only had three podium finishes in 85 starts to his name before defying the odds to claim a famous win on the Birds of Prey.

The Austrian clocked one minute, 9.71 seconds to take the honours and prevent defending champion Kjetil Jansrud from starting the season with back-to-back victories in the discipline.

Jansrud hurtled down the iconic course in 1:09.94 to narrowly miss out on another triumph after his success at Lake Louise last Sunday, with Hannes Reichelt filling the podium.

French duo Adrien Theaux and Alexis Pinturault were fourth and fifth respectively ahead of Aksel Lund Svindal and Olympic downhill champion Matthias Mayer - who shared sixth spot.

Huetter made it a great day for Austrian skiing by winning the downhill in Alberta.

A time of 1:48.53 sealed Huetter's second World Cup victory ahead of Tina Weirather in the first women's downhill race of the season.

Overall world champion Mikaela Shiffrin had to settle for third place and there was concern for her fellow American Vonn when she crashed into the safety net in the final sector of her first run.

Vonn was able to pick herself up and ski down to the finish, seemingly avoiding another injury setback.
