Bret Bielema has been fired as the head coach of the Arkansas football team, the school announced Friday.

The news arrived just minutes after the Razorback's 48-45 loss to Missouri. Interim athletics director Julie Cromer Peoples made the move official after the game.

"Shortly after the completion of today's game, I met with Coach Bret Bielema and informed him of our decision to move forward with new leadership in the Razorback football program," Peoples said in a press release. "During the course of the past five seasons, we have not been able to sustain the success on the field that is expected and required at the University of Arkansas."

Bielema went 29-34 as the head coach of the Razorbacks. He was hired away from Wisconsin after a 2012 season in which he went 8-5, but his record was 68-24 in his seven years with the Badgers.

Arkansas finished this season with a record of 4-8 which means the Razorbacks failed to be bowl eligible for the second time in Bielema's five years with the program. The school never won more than eight games with him at the helm.

"Our goal has been and always will be to compete and win in the SEC and nationally," Peoples said. "I firmly believe that with all the university has to offer including our history and tradition, our facilities, our passionate fan base and competing in the nation's best conference, we will attract the interest of many of the top coaches in the nation."
