Winx storms home for 19th-straight victory
Champion mare Winx has pulled off another incredible comeback victory to win the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes.
Hugh Bowman left it late to claim a 19th-straight victory at Royal Randwick on Saturday as Winx overcame Red Excitement with 100m to spare in the 1600m race.
"I wasn't worried last start but today I really was," Bowman told Channel 7 after the race.
Bowman said Winx showed all of her class to stave off an upset defeat.
"When she hit the afterburners at the 150-metre mark I can't explain the feeling," he said.
The champion mare wore earmuffs during the $250,000 race for the first time after she blew the start in the Warwick Stakes two weeks ago.
"She's at her best and it's pretty hard to beat a horse at her best," trainer Chris Waller said after the race.
Winx is now level with Desert Gold and Gloaming on 19-straight wins and just six behind the unbeatable Black Caviar.
She will next race in the Group 1 George Main Stakes in two weeks as she prepares for a tilt at a third Cox Plate.
Meanwhile, Vega Magic managed to take out the first Group 1 race of the Spring Carnival, winning the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.
