Andrew Wiggins: I'm worth 'nothing less' than a max contract

Andrew Wiggins: I'm worth 'nothing less' than a max contract

Jimmy Butler, Karl-Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Jeff Teague. That's about as formidable of a top four as there is in the league with the exception of the Golden State Warriors.

This team's roster as it currently stands could get them to the playoffs for the first time since 2004. With that said, it makes a lot of sense to lock down the roster as it is. To do that the Timberwolves may need to give Wiggins a contract extension — and soon.

Wiggins believes he's worth it and said as much at the adidas Basketball LVL3 event this week. When asked if he was worth the max-level rookie extension that would pay him up to $148 million over five years, he was succinct and to the point.

"I definitely do," he said (via SI.com). "Nothing less."

Wiggins is currently locked up through the 2018 season but is eligible for a rookie max extension now. The deadline to get the deal done is Oct. 16.

Head coach and president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau said recently the team is looking to lock up Wiggins, who averaged a career-high 23.6 points in 2016-17 along with 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists. He is still just 22.

Wiggins would not talk about trade rumors that linked him to Kyrie Irving and the Cavaliers this week, but was very open about his team's chances this year.

“We have great pieces, we added great pieces, and we have a great coaching staff,” he said. “I think this year is the year.”
