Tapwrit used a strong push down the home stretch to pass Irish War Cry and win the 2017 Belmont Stakes with an unofficial time of 2:30.02.

Irish War Cry, the pre-race favorite at 7-to-2 odds, nearly completed the wire-to-wire victory but couldn't hold off Tapwrit, who had 6-to-1 odds of winning. Tapwrit's jockey, Jose Ortiz, moved the horse into second place during the final turn, setting up the victory in the final meters. Patch finished third.

It was the third Belmont Stakes victory for trainer Todd Pletcher, who also trained this year's Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.

Classic Empire withdrew from the race on Wednesday and Epicharis was a late scratch, reducing the field at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. to 11 horses. Hollywood Handsome, a longshot with 21-to-1 odds, did not finish the race due to an injury.

There wasn't a Triple Crown bid at the 149th Running of the Belmont Stakes as neither Kentucky Derby champion Always Dreaming nor Preakness Stakes winner Cloud Computing entered the third leg of the Triple Crown. However, there was still a thrilling Belmont Stakes.
