Concussed cyclist scarily wobbles back to race

Latvian cyclist Toms Skujins has had a scary experience on the Tour of California after crashing at speed and getting back on his bike.

The 25-year-old was going downhill towards a left turn when his bike fell out from under him.

He was just 22 kilometres from the finish line of the 144.5km second stage.

The wobbly Skujins attempted to get back on but fell again, putting himself in harm's way as he retrieved his GPS and other equipment.

Putting his arms out for balance, the Cannondale-Drapac rider only just avoided being felled a third time by numerous riders making their way down the hill.

A following mechanic bizarrely allowed the Latvian to get back on his bike, after which point he only just saved himself from riding into a gutter.

Skujins' team car stopped the rider and pulled him from the race soon after, taking him straight to the hospital.

"I would never suggest getting in a fight with tarmac because you will lose," he wrote on Twitter.

He was diagnosed with concussion and a broken collarbone.
