Falcons reportedly give CB Desmond Trufant five-year extension

The Falcons have locked in a key member of the team's defense for the long term, reportedly agreeing to terms on a five-year extension with cornerback Desmond Trufant.

Huffington Post reporterJordan Schultz, who was first to report the deal, saysthe contractis worth $69 million,includingalmost$42 million in guaranteed money.

Earlier reportsthis offseason said the two sides were considering a deal worth somewhere between $12 million and $14 million annually.

As he was already under contract through the 2017 season, the extensioncould keep the 26-year-old Trufant in Atlanta through the 2022 season.

Trufant, the Falcons first-round pick out of Washington in 2013, has come to be regarded as one of the NFL's true "shutdown" cornerbacks.He made the Pro Bowl in 2015and was having a strong season in 2016 until a season-ending pectoral muscle injury after nine games.
