A lot of people wrote us off - Smith proud of Australia in defeat

Steve Smith felt Australia had silenced their doubters with their performances in the 2-1 series defeat to India.

Heading into the contest for the Border-Gavasker Trophy, holders Australia were not given much hope against an India side which has been dominant in home conditions under Virat Kohli.

India had not lost a home Test match since December 2012 and many were expecting a 4-0 whitewash, only for Smith's side to upset the odds in the opening clash in Pune, where they were dominant in a 333-run victory.

The hosts fought back, KL Rahul and Ajinkya Rahane steering them to an eight-wicket success in Dharamsala on Tuesday to clinch the series, but Smith was left with an overriding feeling of pride for his side's efforts.

"It was a magnificent series," Smith said in his post-match presentation. "One of the best I have been a part of. Credit to India, they are a fantastic cricket side, particularly in their backyard. If you give them a sniff, they will take that.

"For Australia, this is the toughest conditions for us. To challenge them so much, I am proud. The middle session yesterday, when you lose five for 70, you put yourself behind.

"A lot of people wrote us off. They said it was going to be a 4-0 whitewash. I am proud of the way we have competed.

"We have probably let a few moments slip. Against India you can't do that."

Smith also apologised for his part in what at times has been a heated series.

The Australia captain was criticised by opposite number Kohli for looking up to the dressing room to seek guidance on whether to review an lbw call against him in the second Test, while he was also caught on camera appearing to call Murali Vijay a "f****** cheat" when India's opening batsman appealed for a catch that was subsequently given not out on day three in Dharamsala.

"I have been pretty intense throughout this series. I really wanted to do well for the team," Smith said.

"At times I have been in my own bubble and have let my emotions slip. I apologise for that."
