ECB hopes new T20 competition can be 'most dynamic tournament in world cricket'

A new Twenty20 competition that can become the "most dynamic tournament in world cricket" has been proposed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

The ECB presented an overview of the proposals to its 41 members at meetings in London, with a view to launching a tournament that would start in 2020.

The competition would comprise of eight new teams, expected to be city-based sides, playing 36 games over 38 days and would not overlap with the current T20 Blast contested between county sides.

Similar to the Indian Premier League, the competition would feature a draft and a play-off system.

Three overseas players would also be permitted per team, and ECB chief executive Tom Harrison believes the tournament could rival the IPL and the Big Bash League in stature.

"A new T20 competition can be the most globally relevant, fresh and dynamic tournament in world cricket, built for here but highly valued all around the world," Harrison said.
