Redskins president: Firing GM McCloughan right thing to do

Washington Redskins president Bruce Allen has insisted the decision to fire general manager Scot McCloughan was in the best interests of the franchise.

McCloughan was fired on March 9 despite the Redskins having recorded back-to-back winning seasons since he took over as GM in January 2015.

"I thought it was the right thing to do for where we were at the time," Allen said at the NFL's league meetings in Phoenix.

"We wanted to give clarity to our free agents and to our staff of where we were going. For Scot, it was good timing because it allows him to be hired by anyone right now before this draft."

Reports had suggested that McCloughan's problems with alcohol allegedly resurfacing had factored into his dismissal.

Allen refused to address that topic saying, "Our team is a family."

While McCloughan himself has not commented publicly, Allen is adamant there are no hard feelings on his end.

"I heard all the different things that were said afterward," Allen said. "Scot and I had a wonderful relationship. I do like him as a person. And I wanted him to do great. And it just didn't work out."
