NHL rookie scores game-winning goal for opposing team

For an 18-year-old from Finland, Patrik Laine has had an outstanding rookie season in the NHL.

He has scored 17 goals in 32 games for the Winnipeg Jets, good for third in the league.

Unfortunately, however, mistakes happen.

The Jets led Edmonton Oilers 2-1 heading into the third period yesterday as they looked to snatch a significant win over their Western Conference rivals.

Edmonton veteran Mark Letestu scored in a power play to level the scores with 17 minutes left in the game, and from there things went downhill for the road team.

With just under nine minutes remaining Letestu took a wide shot that was blocked by Winnipeg goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck, the puck rebounding into the path of Laine.

Laine looked to clear the danger but didn't connect as he'd hoped, scoring what would turn out to be the winning goal for the Oilers.

"I think everybody saw what happened and that's my comment," Laine told reporters after the game.

Laine was consoled by his teammates on the bench after the goal, and the young player appeared to take in the comments despite the disappointment.

"Everybody just said move on, there's still time left and hope that you can score and do right. Just keep going," he said.
