Queenslander Rachael Watson has claimed a remarkable gold medal in the 50M Freestyle S4 after only 18 months in the sport.

Watson went into the final as the fastest qualifier after setting a Paralympic record in the heats to qualify in 40.69. Here time was nearly four seconds quicker than the rest of the field.

"I really didn't expect that", she said. "It's just amazing."

"This moment isn't just for me, it's for my family as well."

Elsewhere, Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch became the first sailing team to successfully defend a Paralympic title after claiming gold in the SKUD18 class with two races to spare.
