Skier Lindsey Vonn has posted a gruesome picture on Facebook, days after undergoing surgery to repair her injured knee.
The US star broke her shin and tore the medial and anterior cruciate ligaments in her right knee in a horrifying crash at the World Championships at Schladming in Austria.
Vonn shared the photo, showing major swelling and bruising, and wrote: "My knee looks...um...not very good.... #longskirtsthissummer #ugh"
The 28-year-old was airlifted off the piste and will not compete again this season - she is aiming to return in time for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, which take place next February.
The US Ski Team confirmed that the operation was a success, while Dr William Sterett, who performed the surgery, is optimistic that Vonn can make a full recovery.
"She will do everything in her power to return as quickly as possible to competitive skiing," Sterett said.
Vonn is the most successful alpine skier of her generation, having won four overall World Cup titles and downhill gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Later that year she received the Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year award.
Her looks have earned her a significant following off the piste, and in 2010 she appeared in a Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition photoshoot.
Last December she denied reports of a romantic involvement with golfer Tiger Woods, saying: "We are just friends."
Rumours of a relationship have continued, however, with reports that Vonn used Woods's private jet to leave Austria following her injury.
Vonn's publicist said in January: "Lindsey is currently in the midst of the World Cup season in Europe.
"Her focus is solely on competing and on defending her titles and thus she will not participate in any speculation surrounding her personal life at this time."
