Former Aston Villa boss Ron Atkinson says Paul Lambert needs some wins on the board.

Atkinson insists new-look Villa must hit the ground running to avoid the manager's bold plans backfiring.

Big Ron told the Birmingham Mail: "The English game has seen plenty of success stories down the years from teams which built big from small names.

"No-one did it better than Liverpool, who mastered the art of nicking nuggets from the lower divisions, grooming them in the old Central League and then introducing them into the first team.

"There was Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and many more besides. The difference was they would be stepping into a very good, experienced, tough, well-oiled team. They would not be expected to actually be that team."
