Hawthorn ruckman David Hale says the Hawks won't be too concerned by facing Port Adelaide this weekend, despite sides often lifting in a big way following a coach's departure.

The Power finally announced on Monday that Primus had opted to finish his time at the club after the board unanimously decided over the weekend not to extend his contract into a third season following an embarrassing loss to league newcomers GWS.

But despite the Hawks coming off a loss of their own to arch-rivals Geelong last Friday night, a confident Hale said the Hawks wouldn't worry themselves too much about Port's response to Primus' unceremonious exit.

"I think last time we played them, we won by about 50 points," said Hale, referring to a 46-point win in Round 11.

"Obviously they've had a bit of turmoil and they'll want to come out and play well.

"It's hard to say how different players respond I suppose ... whatever they put at us on the weekend we can only try and counter, so it's up to them I suppose how they come out and approach it.

"But it's not really about who we play anymore," he added.

"If we can do our thing and play the way we want to play we think we should be able to beat any side we play."

Despite his confidence, Hale said the Hawks were still coming to terms with Friday night's epic loss to the Cats.

The former Kangaroo expected coach Alastair Clarkson to examine the last two minutes of that game in Monday's review, especially after Brad Sewell and Paul Puopolo made critical mistakes - the latter setting up Geelong's final forward thrust that ended with Tom Hawkins kicking the winning goal after the siren.

"I guess coming back from the margin that we did in the end, put our nose in front and then to get rolled at the end was obviously hard to take," Hale said.

"We can't be giving them that sort of start in the future if we face them again.

"Obviously it will be a big occasion if we face them again next time but in the way we fought back for three quarters after that to get in front was pretty encouraging."
