Serbia a Davis Cup chance for Australia

Australia may yet face Serbia in September's Davis Cup playoff after the Europeans were surprisingly left unseeded for the competition overnight. A Novak Djokovic-inspired Serbia rode a wave of home-crowd support to beat the Australians 4-1 in the 2007 play-off on clay in Belgrade. But the Serbs lost in the first round this year and now that they are unseeded could face Australia to return to the main group in 2009. Switzerland also just missed out on a seeding and are in the mix to play the Australians as well. The other possibilities for the tenth seeded Australians are Chile, Peru, Great Britain, Brazil, Netherlands and India. The group play-off draw will be held at the International Tennis Federation's headquarters in London on Wednesday. With the host determined by where the countries played when they last met, Australia would have home court in any contest with Brazil, Peru, Serbia or Switzerland, but would have to play away against Chile, Great Britain or India. If Australia is drawn to play the Netherlands a coin toss will be used to decide home court advantage as the two nations have never previously met.
