Former Olympic runner John Steffensen has set his sights on a boxing bout with outcast Wallaby-turned-boxer Quade Cooper.
"I'd like to make Quade my first professional fight," Steffensen told Fairfax.
The Commonwealth gold medallist reportedly began training with renowned trainer Jeff Fenech as well as Danny Green and Kostya Tszyu following his disappointing performance at the London Olympics.
Steffensen, who has held state boxing titles in the past, put many offside after his scathing accusations aimed at Athletics Australia and the Australian Olympic Committee.
Steffensen claimed racism was still rife in the sport after teenager Steven Solomon was picked to run the 400m men's event ahead of him, and even threatened to boycott the men's relay in protest.
"I'm very pleased with the way it is going with Jeff [Fenech]," Steffensen said.
Known for his sharp tongue, akin to the polarizing trash-talking boxer Anthony Mundine, the prospect of Steffensen entering the boxing scene will have promoter's frothing at the mouth. Especially so, should he take on rugby star Quade Cooper, who has similarly attracted attention for his outspoken comments in the media.
While attending Danny Green's bout against Shane Cameron with NRL player Willie Mason, Steffensen confirmed plans were being made for him and Cooper to "get it on".

ReplyIts not the fault of these arrogant #$%$holes that boxing has become a freak-show....its boxing's fault. If pro boxing is to survive the sport needs to unify the acronyms and stop these pseudo fighters in their tracks by putting them into the ring against real fighter so they face real consequences.
ReplyTwo arrogant, overrated, self absorbed nobody's fighting in the ring. What a yawn.....
Replythese ex footballers are ruining Boxing here in Australia. they never fight real fighters and think they are world champions. there are real tough boxers in this country who go under the radar because some how these ex footy players call them selves pro's get the headlines as boxing freak shows.
