Campese calls for Deans' head

NZ Newswire November 15, 2012, 4:47 pm

Former Test star David Campese says Wallabies coach Robbie Deans should be sacked for "destroying Australian rugby".

Campese made a name for himself as a specialist try-scorer and lamented the lack of skill level in the team humiliated 33-6 by France last week in the opening match of the Spring Tour.

The former winger told English newspaper The Telegraph he was in two minds about wanting Australia to beat England at Twickenham this weekend, because victory might prolong the career of Deans.

"Deans has destroyed Australian rugby and I want him to go," said Campese.

"We've got a team at the moment that can't catch and can't pass.

"Wallaby teams in the past were never like this. Anyone who knows anything about Australian rugby knows what it's famous for - loops, angles, switches, counter-attack, creative play. Where's all that gone? We can't even pass properly.

"I just want him to go. He's the worst thing that has ever happened to Australian rugby."

Campese was an attacking sensation, scoring 64 tries in 101 Tests.

In 2012, try-scoring has been rare for the Wallabies who have posted just 12 five-pointers in 12 matches.
