Injured jockey Shane Dye could miss the remainder of the Brisbane winter carnival following a freak riding mishap at Doomben.
Dye was a late replacement for jockey Ric McMahon aboard the Les Ross-trained Prend in the XXXX Gold Handicap on Saturday but was dumped when his stirrup iron snapped after the race.
The internationally-acclaimed hoop suffered rib cartilage damage and was later forced to stand down from riding New Zealand three-year-old Mynewbestfriend who finished seventh from the outside barrier in the Group Three Doomben Classic (1615m) won by the Liam Birchley-trained Pepperwood.
"I was pulling up on my first ride when my iron broke," Dye said.
"I've been riding for 25 years and that's never happened to me before.
"I've torn some cartilage and hurt my rib cage. It'll take time (to mend) and it could be four to six weeks before I'm right.
"But you never know and I'll know a lot more in another week or two."
A two-time winner of the Sydney jockeys' premiership, Dye returned to Australia in March after spending eight seasons riding in Hong Kong.
It was during his time there that he suffered life-threatening injuries and required emergency brain surgery following a horror fall at Sha Tin in June 2006.
However, despite his injury setbacks Dye recently scoffed at suggestions retirement could be imminent.
