Lees takes blinkers off Samantha Miss

Sires' Produce Stakes runner-up Samantha Miss will be without blinkers when she faces a rematch with outstanding colt Sebring in the Champagne Stakes.

Trainer Kris Lees put shades on the filly two starts ago when she finished fourth to subsequent Golden Slipper placegetter Portillo in the Magic Night Stakes and she wore them again in the Sires' (1400m).

But given the step up to 1600m at Randwick on Saturday, Lees has opted for a gear change.

"The blinkers come off this time," he said.

"I just thought she overraced a fraction for the first couple of hundred metres last start and with the likelihood we'll get a small field again on Saturday I'll take them off."

Samantha Miss is one of just nine nominations for the Champagne Stakes, the final leg of the two-year-old triple crown which also comprises the Golden Slipper and Sires' Produce Stakes.

Sebring is shooting to become the first horse since Dance Hero to win all three races and Lees concedes his filly faces a tough task turning the tables on the Gai Waterhouse-trained youngster who is unbeaten in all five starts.

Waterhouse prepared Dance Hero to win the juvenile triple crown four years ago.

"I was very happy with her run in the Sires, she was beaten by the top two-year-old of the season," Lees said of Samantha Miss' length second to Sebring.

"But we'll take him on again plus a couple of others.

"I'm looking forward to seeing her over the mile but Sebring is a very smart horse, he looked pretty strong on the line last start so he's definitely the one to beat again."

Sebring is expected to start odds-on favourite in the Champagne.

The race is one of four Group One events on the lucrative program which draws the curtain on the Sydney autumn carnival.
