Saturday Arvo Racing is back at Flemington this weekend for the Group 1 weight-for-age Australian Cup and the $1.25m Newmarket Handicap.

Speith is likely to jump favourite in the Group 1, 1200m Newmarket Handicap as jockey Hugh Bowman aims to steer him to victory after being beaten by a nose in his last two starts at Flemington. Neil Kearney caught up with Speith’s trainer Bryce Heys to get an insight into the chestnut’s training.

It’s a top class field for this sprint including last year’s winner The Quarterback and top weight Terravista. Rounding out the quality runners are Extreme Choice with international jockey Joao Moreira on board, along with Lindsay Park stars Sheidel andRedkirk Warrior.

Then a star-studded field of 12 will battle it out in the $1.5 million Australian Cup over 2000m including The United States, Stratum Star fresh from three wins, Darren Weir-trained Humidor and Caulfield Cup winner Jameka from barrier 11.

During the week Bruce McAvaney visited Australia’s top trainer Darren Weir at his training facility in Ballarat ahead of Humidor’s bid for the Australian Cup.

Saturday Arvo Racing also comes from Sydney featuring the Group 1 Coolmore Classic from Rosehill Gardens.

The Australian Cup will be hosted by Bruce McAvaney, with expert analysis from Francesca Cumani, Simon Marshall andSimon O’Donnell. Jason Richardson has all the news from the mounting yard with James Jordan delivering form analysis, andMelina Sarris reports on all the colour and characters from around the track.
