Lashinda Demus Biography
Demus enters the 2012 Games aiming to be the first American woman ever to win the 400-meter hurdles at the Olympics. She earned a spot in London by finishing first at the U.S. trials by clocking in at 53.98 seconds, and her winning time at the 2011 world championships of 52.47 is the third-fastest in history. Demus, a four-time U.S. outdoor champion, is making her first Olympic appearance since 2004, when she failed to reach the finals. She missed qualifying for the 2008 team, dropping from first to fourth down the final stretch. Her disappointing finish was certainly understandable after she gave birth to twin boys in June 2007, and was not quite yet back into race shape. Demus, an 11-time all-American at South Carolina, quickly put that letdown behind her, and took silver in the 2009 worlds - her second runner-up finish in the event (2005).
