Alice Schmidt Biography
Schmidt used her experience in the 800 to propel her into the Olympics for the second time. With 50 meters left in the race at the U.S. trials, Schmidt made the push from the back and grabbed third place and the final spot on the team. She had an easier time qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Games, as she was the runner-up at the trials, but her Olympic run ended early with a sixth-place finish in the opening-round heat. Over the last eight seasons, Schmidt has shown her potential by breaking the 2-minute mark 14 times, but she's been inconsistent since Beijing. She didn't break the 2-minute barrier once in 2010 but was able to do so a few times in 2011, including a third-place finish at nationals. Her success started in her college days at the University of North Carolina, where she was part of a squad that sported two fellow Olympians. She won the NCAA title two years in a row and broke school and ACC records.
