Hockeyroos defeat Japan to tie series

AAP - July 9, 2008, 12:17 pm

The Australian women's hockey team have thrashed Japan 4-1 in a warm-up for the Beijing Olympics.

The Hockeyroos' win at Tenri Hockey Stadium tied up the four-match series between the nations at 2-2.

Heavy rain delayed the game but when it eventually got underway in extreme humidity the Hockeyroos were unfazed, scoring two quick goals to set up a commanding lead.

Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said the series in Japan was a good preparation for Beijing, where similar conditions are expected.

"Overall we got a lot out of this series," Murray said.

"The last match in particular was played in unbelievably humid conditions, so this was good experience to simulate the similar conditions we can expect in Beijing."

He said the team's ability to convert their chances had provided the winning edge.

"They (Japan) actually had more penalty corners, circle penetrations and shots on goal, however we were the ones who were able to convert early in the match.

"Our defence performed equally well in what was an overall solid performance."

Murray said Japan's side had improved in recent years and would be a strong medal contender at the Games.

"Japan is a very capable side," he said.

"They are not like the Japanese sides from the past where people think they are walk-overs.

"They are a genuine chance to win a medal at the upcoming Olympics, so to split the series with two wins each in the trying conditions which they are used to playing in is pleasing."
