Olga Kharlan Biography
Just 17 at the Beijing Games, Kharlan led Ukraine on its comeback against China to take gold in women's team saber, recording the medal-winning touch. She is considered one of the rising stars of fencing and a medal favorite for London, as she's ranked third in the world behind chief rivals Sofia Velikaya of Russia and Mariel Zagunis of the United States. Though she lost to Zagunis in the 2009 and '10 senior world championships, Kharlan defeated the two-time defending Olympic champion at a World Cup event in May. She finished 13th in the individual competition in Beijing and earned both an individual and team medal at each of the last three senior worlds. Kharlan was the European champion in 2009 and '11 while also winning four consecutive junior world titles from 2007-10. She is a former Latin dancer who took up fencing at the suggestion of her godfather.
