BEIJING 2008

Number one despite worlds loss

Just a quick update, as i have about 15 minutes battery left here, and no charger.

Just got done with the BMX Worlds in China. I had a pretty good day, and made the main (event) but had a pretty disapointing lap to finish 7th.

I won my 1/8, quarter final and semi final, so i was feeling pretty confident going into the main, but it wasn't meant to be.

I was pretty hammered by the final, it was a long, hot, hard day. In a nutshell, I got a good snap, but my leg buckled on my second crank, then I just didn't ride smooth enough into the first straight.

I hit the first corner in third, but I was hit from all directions from the guys all around me - was right in the middle of everyone and had nowhere to go(I guess that's what happens in the final of the the worlds, everyone going stupid).

Maris Strombergs from Latvia took the win, which he deserved. He's been flying all year, and was always going to be really hard to beat.

But the best thing was that my boy Sam Willoughby smoked the juniors and became world champ! He was on fire all day and got the much-deserved win. He's been working so hard, and it was so cool for him to get the victory!

A minor goal of mine was to end the years racing (which concludes at world champs each year) as the number-one-ranked rider in the world.

Before the race, I was sitting in 3rd behind Kyle Bennett and Donny Robinson. Kyle went out in the quarters, and as it turned out it came down to whoever beat who in the main between myself and Donny.

Donny ended up 4th so I took 2nd overall for the year, which is still a very nice cash bonus from the UCI, but 1st would have been better.

I'm currently at the airport lounge in Kuala Lumpur on my way to Fort William, Scotland for the World Cup this weekend, my first MTB race of the year, which is pretty exciting!

cheers!

Jared
