The World Cup in China Beckons

Today (14/2) just after morning training had finished the drug testers from the Australian SportsĀ Anti-Doping Authority arrived. I was randomly selected along with a few other divers, I had to provide a urine sample and a blood sample, and all in all it took me just over 2 hours. It is quite embarrassing to provide the sample, but if you want to be an elite athlete you have to expect drug tests here and there.

My diving preparations have been going quite well and I have been doing lots of training since the National Championships to fine tune my dives. There have also been a lot of synchronised practice sessions both in the dryland centre and in the pool, with Sharleen [Stratton] and Melissa [Wu]. Scott Robertson's preparation hasn't been so good, he had an X-Ray last week on his sore wrist, which shows a fracture in his scaphoid bone. Scott is a trooper and will still be competing at the World Cup, having already packed lots of strapping tape to help support the wrist while diving.

Tomorrow (15/2) the Australian Diving Team headed off to Beijing, China, to compete at the 16th FINA Diving World Cup. The team includes: Melissa Wu, Sharleen Stratton, Loudy Wiggins, Chantelle Newbery, Robert Newbery, Matthew Mitcham, Mathew Helm, Scott Robertson and me! I can't wait to see the Water Cube, it looks fantastic! The World Cup is a very important event as it is everyone's last chance to secure Olympic positions for countries.

My first event in Beijing is the Women's 10m Synchronised with Melissa, which is on the 21st of February, then on the 24th I will compete in the Women's 3m Synchronised with Sharleen.

Then I will be off to Shenzhen, which is in China but very close to Hong Kong. There I will be competing in the Chinese Champions Tour, I will be competing in the Women's 3m event and the Women's 3m Synchronised event. Finally I will be back in Australia on the 4th of March, which is after 3 weeks in China.

Good luck in the diving ahead and just remember that you are already a winner no matter how you go, you just need to trust yourself and reach for the stars. From Gary on behalf of Grade 6/7 Bowen
