BEIJING 2008

Simon Reeve: Big decisions ahead for Gymnastics Federation

As we wind up the gymnastics program, the lingering issue is whether or not some Chinese team members were under-aged.

With claims surfacing last week that the diminutive gold medallist He Kexin was 14 years old, the problem was isolated. Since then however, suggestions have been made that both Jiang Yuyuan and Jang Yilin are also under 16.

The IOC has asked the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) to investigate and they are faced with what could potentially be a huge scandal.

The results of these games have signified a shift of power away from European nations and towards China, who could dominate for 20 years now. Considering how many kids will take up gymnastics after this success, China could end up with half the world's gymnasts.

The IGF were trying to put controversy from Atlanta behind them and it looks like it may be about to get worse for the governing body. China could well be stripped of a number of their medals and the impact will be massive.

Aside from this, covering the Games was an overwhelmingly positive experience. The staff here from ground level to the top were professional and upbeat and the whole job has been extraordinary.
